Synopsis
Carine Adler's feature debut has been critically hailed as one of the most promising and daring British films of 1997. Described by many critics as a feminist answer to Mike Leigh's Naked and Lars Von Trier's Breaking the Waves. Starring Samantha Morton as Iris (Academy award nominee for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Sweet and Lowdown, 1999), Under the Skin is an exploration of the complex world of female emotions and sibling rivalry. Iris is stuck in an emotional void after the sudden death of her mother. Her frustration is exacerbated by her combative relationship with her older sister, Rose, of whom she has always been jealous. In her confusion, Iris desperately seeks emotional fulfillment through her risky and self-destructive sexual exploration. She nearly loses everything in her life, but eventually comes to terms with her mother's death and begins her life afresh.Theatrical Release Date
