Synopsis
Wales in 1911 is a beautiful world, but fraught with racial and economic unrest. Set against the backdrop of the little-known 1911 Tredegar riots, when Jewish businesses in the Welsh valley were attacked and looted, Solomon and Gaenor chronicles a passionate and illicit love affair between Gaenor, a Welsh girl and Solomon, a Jewish boy. Solomon conceals his Jewish identity and courts Gaenor but eventually his identity is revealed and the prejudice and mistrust of their respective families and communities threatens to drive the young lovers apart.
An Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Film, Solomon and Gaenor is a moving love story that has been widely praised for the terrific performances of its two young leads, its outstanding cinematography and its use of English, Welsh and Yiddish dialogue that enhance the film's authenticity.
