One normal Monday morning, a man in a black suit wakes up in a posh hotel room. His memory is fuzzy; he has no idea of where he is, how he got there, or what happened the night before. Suddenly, a packet of purification salts (to ward off evil spirits) drops out of his pocket reminding him of a funeral he went to a few days earlier. He then remembers a café, a bar, some yazuka – Are they only parts of a dream or is it reality reaching out to him?
An exquisitely crafted black comedy about an ordinary man sucked deeper and deeper into extraordinary circumstances. Monday is shot through a series of flashbacks in a studied ‘SABU’ style that will keep you on the edge of your seat and wondering how one man’s life got so out-of-control!
Sabu is one of Japan’s hottest young filmmakers. His second feature, Postman Blues (’97), was successful at home and abroad, going on to receive acclaim from several international film festivals.
