synopsis

À la mort de son frère aîné Joe (Kyle Chandler), Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) est ébranlé d'apprendre qu'il a été désigné comme unique tuteur de son neveu Patrick (Lucas Hedges). Prenant congé de son emploi, Lee retourne à contrecur vers Manchester-by-the-Sea afin de prendre soin de Patrick, un fougueux jeune homme de 16 ans, et se trouve forcé de faire face aux circonstances qui l'ont mené à se séparer de sa femme Randi (Michelle Williams) et de la communauté où il est né et fut élevé. Liés par le souvenir d'un homme ayant maintenu le lien familial, Lee et Patrick peinent à s'ajuster à une existence sans lui.
