Ayesha is a Muslim widow with a secret past, living peacefully with her beloved son Saleem in a small town in Pakistan, close to the Indian border. When the fires of Islamic nationalism invade their tranquil lives, Saleem is gripped by a religious fervor and takes up with a group of fundamentalists bent on bringing radical Islamic law to their friends and neighbors.
